THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER -- FALL 2025
SCIENCE FALSELY SO-CALLED
At the beginning of every semester, one of my colleagues would ask her students to fill out a survey. One of the questions she asked was, "What do you expect from this class?" One time, a student responded, “I expect that the teacher will inflict her knowledge upon us.” I know that this is not a classroom, but I would like to inflict you all with some knowledge today.
We can define “science” as an organized, repeatable method for obtaining true knowledge. All of us learned in grade school the steps of “scientific method”: First, you make an observation and ask a question; then, you form a hypothesis or belief. Next, you test the hypothesis and draw a conclusion. Finally, you repeat the process. If the same result happens over and over, then it is true.
A good example is gravity. I make an observation that when I let go of any object, it falls to the ground. So, I ask a question: Will objects always fall to the ground when I let go of them? I form a hypothesis that there is a force pulling it downward, and that an object will fall to the ground every time that I let go of it. I test the hypothesis by holding up a book and letting it go. It falls. I draw a conclusion that my hypothesis was correct. I repeat this process many times and the same thing happens every time. And so in this way, I have shown scientifically that when something is suspended in mid-air and I let go of it, it will fall. And this experiment can be repeated for anyone who doubts my conclusion. This is true. This is proven. This is science.
True science is very useful. It can keep you safe from deadly illnesses; it can make you more productive on your job through machines and technology; it can save your life through surgeries and medications. Science can prove many useful truths, but it cannot prove all truths because not all truths are scientific in nature; not all truths can be observed in a scientific nature. But that does not mean that they are not true. Some things are true whether you believe them or not, whether they can be proven or not. And that is when we cross over into the realm of faith.
Faith can be defined as an educated belief in something that cannot be concretely proven with scientific facts. Faith is the exact opposite of science. I did not say that it contradicts science. It is just the opposite of science. These two go hand in hand, and both are useful and necessary to our reality. Faith is acting upon a belief that you have not proven concretely with observable evidence.
On April 15 of 2021, I climbed on a plane bound for Wallingford, Connecticut, so I could meet Miss Becca Dibble. I had never been to Connecticut. And I had never met Becca. But I believed Connecticut was there and that I would find Becca there. I couldn’t prove it. I knew nothing about the plane or how it worked. But somehow I believed that I was safe. I believed it so much that I knew I was safe. I believed it so strongly that I paid $500 and climbed onto a giant piece of metal with wings and I was suspended in mid-air for five and a half hours. And I was never nervous (well, not about the plane). I felt safe. And I was safe. And when I got there, guess who I found waiting for me at the airport? And she said, “Welcome to Connecticut.” (Or something like that. It’s all a blur.) That is faith. I could not prove any of this! But I walked upon what I firmly believed, and it turned out that I was right all along. That is faith.
You and I live our lives for Jesus Christ whom we have never seen in the flesh. We have sacrificed vain pleasures and worldliness, because we believe so strongly that when we pass from this life, we will stand before an Almighty God. We believe so strongly that we know. This is faith. We cannot prove that he exists: we have no pictures, we have no videos, we have no fragment of the cross, and we have no DNA sample. But even so, we believe so concretely that He exists that we get all dressed up, give our tithes, and quit smoking crack. That is faith. Just because we cannot prove it concretely does not mean that it is not true.
Champions of science mock our faith. They say that we are believing fairy tales. They say that God is not real because there is no scientific evidence of his existence. They said that if God is real, then we should be able and ready to prove it in a scientific way. But that is not true at all. What they are trying to do is to fit God nicely and neatly into the science box. And it will not work, because faith and science are two different things. Please don’t misquote me, I did not say that faith and science contradict each other. They do not contradict each other at all. If anything, true science brings glory to God. When we look at the science of the human body or the the Planet Earth, it should make us say, Wow! How could all of this have happened without a Creator. No, true science does not contradict faith. All I said was that they are not the same thing. God cannot be concretely proven with scientific evidence because He does not want to be proven. He wants you to believe. I don’t pretend to know why, but that is the quality that He is looking for in us. He wants to see if we can exercise our faith. Faith is a beautiful thing that He is using to separate the sheep from the goats. John 20:29 says “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” This is the way that he designed it. So what if the spiritual world does not fit into the science box? And it was never supposed to.
I’ll tell you something else that does not fit into the science box. The theory of evolution is not scientific at all. It poses as science, but it does not even fit the definition of science, and it was not constructed according to scientific method. The theory of evolution asserts that all of the matter of the universe: the stars, the planets, the rocks, the water, the sand suddenly exploded out of nothing. And over the course of billions and billions of years gradually evolved into the world that we see around us today. A virus gradually changed into a bug that gradually changed into a rat that climbed a tree and learned how to fly and became a bird and got tired and landed and became a monkey who was your great great great granddaddy. Hogwash! That is NOT science. That is interesting. That is entertaining. But that is NOT science. It doesn’t meet the definition of science. It cannot be tested. It cannot be observed. It cannot be repeated.
The big bang theory and evolution actually follow more along the definition of faith. These ideas are religious in nature. These people are walking upon a belief that they cannot concretely prove. It actually takes FAR more faith to believe that all of this beautiful, complex world came from nothing by accident. Imagine if I showed you my beautiful brand new house, and you ask me who built it. I say to you, no one built it. Actually, a tornado hit the Lowe’s in New Haven and dumped it all right here in my yard just like this. Not only would you not believe me, but you would be insulted that I thought that you were foolish enough to believe that. A tornado cannot hit a lumber yard and accidentally build a house. As ridiculous as that sounds, it pales in comparison to the ridiculous things that false science is asking us to believe.
And so there is faith, and there is science. Both are good and neither is to be rejected. But just like we should reject false religions, we should also reject false science. Evolution mocks the idea of creation. But real science has always supported and agreed with the Bible. The Bible has been shown to be accurate in linguistics and in history and in archaeology and in geography and in medicine and in many others. After all, long before mankind discovered anything about the scientific realm, the Bible had already been written and it was correct in every detail when we were mistaken.
There are hundreds and hundreds of examples, but I will present just a few to make my point.
The Bible holds true in Astronomy. Up until the 1500s, science believed the earth to be flat and supported by a giant pillar. They thought that if you sailed too far, you’d fall off the end of the earth. They thought that it was either day or night. They did not understand that the earth was round and that, as the earth turned, that day and night were happening at the same time. For most of human history, science was very confused. But long before that, the Bible had stated in Isaiah 40:22 that the earth was a sphere; And in Job 26:7 that God located the earth in a place of emptiness and hung it upon nothing. Job 26:10 says “He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness.”
And Jesus in Luke 17:34-36 foretells daytime and nighttime events happening at the same time. He said two would be in one bed, one would be taken and the other left; and two would be in the field; one would be taken and the other left. Until the 1500s, science was sure that there were only 1100 stars in existence and that they were all the same. But long before that, Jeremiah 33:22 told us that the stars
were without number, and I Corinthians 15:41 says that every star is different.
The Bible holds true in health and medicine. Until the 1500s, science did not even begin to understand things like the role of blood in the body or the importance of sanitation. Did you know that George Washington died when doctors tried to bleed him to get rid of the bad blood that had caused his cold? But if they had read their bible carefully, they would have known, as Leviticus 17:11 states, that “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Long before scientists understood the importance of washing hands regularly under running water, or the importance of cooking meat thoroughly, or the importance of separating waste from the living quarters, or of separating sick people from the general population, the book of Leviticus had already given specific instructions for all of these things.
The Bible holds true in Geography. Long before scientists understood matter: like elements and atoms, verses like Hebrews 11:3 had already told us that “that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” Long before scientists understood what light was or how it moved, the Bible had already described in the book of Job how light is fragmented into a spectrum and how light moves across the globe. Long before scientists understood the water cycle and air currents, the Bible had already described the evaporation and precipitation in Ecclesiastes 1:7; Job 26:8,10; and underground spring and rivers in Job 38:30; and the global wind currents in Ecclesiastes :6-7: “The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. [7] All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again."
So, even though the Bible is a book of faith and not of science, you can rest assured that every single detail that it provides—sooner or later—will be proven to be absolutely correct. Never cast away eternal truth for what seems to be true right now.
Psalm 19:1-3 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. [3]There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.”
